The Westgate Wanderers use the following Ride System for all Club rides.
Lead Rider
This is usually the person who has planned and stepped out the route of the ride.
The job of the lead rider is to follow the route, indicating for the person behind them (known as second place) where to stop and which direction to direct the following group.
As soon as this is done they continue riding to the next turn or corner and repeat the process.
As a rule no-one should overtake the lead rider but there will be occasions, when it is agreed before hand, that quicker riders can overtake the lead rider, as long as they they know where they are going and wait at the next corner, because once they overtake the lead rider they are on their own and no longer within the group.
Second Rider (Corner Marker)
The rider who is second in line (next behind the lead rider) can be anyone with the exception of "Tail End Charlie".
Their job is to stop (in a place that is safe) where indicated by the lead rider and direct the rest of the group in the right direction and not leave, until they are acknowledged by the "Tail End Charlie".
At the next corner the next rider in line then becomes "Second Place (Corner Marker)" so it is then their job to direct the group through that corner and so on.
Tail End Charlie
The job of "Tail End Charlie" is to acknowledge the Second Place rider at corners and to ensure that no-one is left behind when leaving any location.
They also monitor the road travelled to make sure there are no break downs, loss of luggage or accidents etc.
If they come across anyone in the group who has a problem they will stop and find out what is going on and notify the ride leader, as soon as the problem is resolved they will notify the ride leader and catch up with the rest of the group.
